Elizabeth Maddison

Director, Strategic Operations

Elizabeth is responsible for the corporate governance function at GAIN and leads the Human Resources (HR) and Information Technology (IT) teams. She works with colleagues to coordinate activities across GAIN’s operations.

She joined GAIN in November 2017, following eight years as Director of Strategic Operations and Secretary to the Board at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). Prior to that, she held senior roles in UK further and higher education, working nationally and institutionally. The latter included a decade leading the strategic planning and projects function at a UK University, as well as work on widening participation in higher education and leading an award-winning initiative in university/community engagement.

A very long time ago, she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford, a Master's degree in Education from the Open University and a Master's in Public Administration from the University of Warwick. At IDS, she led the professional functions across HR, Finance, IT and Facilities, supporting GBP 22 million turnover and 240 staff. Relevant projects there included a significant governance review and refresh; searches for the Director and Board Chair; work on pensions, incentives and rewards; financial sustainability; risk management; various restructures; and major collaborations.
