Session - Our Education, Our Rights: Girls in Crisis

19th July

Conflicts, the climate crisis, hunger & health crises and the ways these overlap impact girls most severely. Adolescent girls in particular are often the most vulnerable to violence, exploitation and harmful practices during times of crisis. They are the least prioritised when food is scarce and often go hungry. Policymakers and the humanitarian community often view them as powerless and rarely consult them about decisions that impact their lives. Yet evidence shows that education during times of crisis safeguards girls’ rights, builds their agency and allows them to be seen and heard.

The session will be organised around four dialogues between young activists impacted by crisis and decision makers/ service providers. The dialogues will spotlight four common impacts that crises have on girls rights.  It will utilise a Nhanga inspired approach whereby a safe space is created to have honest conversations about accountability and solidarity building when it comes to the prioritisation of girls’ education in crisis.
