Climate action for resilient and nutritious food systems
At COP31, GAIN will highlight the role of food systems in addressing climate change, strengthening resilience and improving food security and nutrition. Working with partners, we will showcase proven solutions and encourage greater investment to take them to scale.
The 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31) will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from Monday 9 to Friday 20 November 2026.
COP31
The COPs are an annual opportunity for Parties and non-Party stakeholders to meet and shape our international response to climate change.
Food systems are now embedded at the heart of the UNFCCC COP agenda, represented broadly across the negotiations and the Global Climate Action Agenda. Initiatives such as the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) Partnership and Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN), launched at COP27, carry the torch from COP to COP.
Parties also continue to deliver on the commitments of the COP28 UAE Leaders Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action, and the COP30 Belém Declaration on Hunger, Poverty, and Human-Centred Climate Action, both of which are supported by GAIN.
Meanwhile, food systems issues have broken free of only the agriculture and food security negotiations to appear across the agenda. GAIN has supported formal submissions and engaged in advocacy to ensure that both the urgent need for and the potential co-benefits of food systems action - especially for nutrition - are prominent in negotiators' minds.

COP31 comes in the context of conflicts and geopolitical strains that are affecting access to nutritious foods, as well as increasingly frequent climate shocks and a Super El Nino that are affecting production around the world. Parties and non-Party stakeholders come to COP not to reopen old negotiations, but to focus on solutions: implementing past commitments, accelerating action, and scaling finance.
Parties will discuss the future of the agriculture negotiations, due to conclude at this COP - with a particular focus on how they can support implementation. Other areas of the negotiations, such as finance, just transition, and adaptation, will also have crucial connections to food systems.
GAIN's primary objective at COP31 is to highlight interventions and investments with proven benefits for climate adaptation and mitigation, enhanced resilience, improved food security and nutrition, a just transition, economic growth, and national security.
Together with partners, GAIN is supporting the COP31 Presidency in its Showcase and Spotlight events where solutions for agriculture, food systems, climate, food security and nutrition will be highlighted. The aim is to give confidence to other countries to replicate successes, and to financial institutions to increase investment in proven models.
