If the complementary foods provided to young children lack essential proteins, vitamins and minerals, it can hinder growth and development and make them vulnerable to illnesses.

The Nutrition of the Department of Health issued a Tender for a national survey with the aim of establishing baseline information on the predisposition of people to food fortification as well as establishing selected blood micronutrient values in children aged 1 – 9 years and women of child bearing age. This report summarises the key findings of this national survey.

In 2008, GAIN began drafting plans to create sustainable market-based solutions to address the problem of micronutrient deficiencies in children in South Africa. Improving the diets of infants and young children
This paper describes the focused ethnographic study on complementary feeding that was commissioned by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and highlights findings from studies conducted in three very different country contexts (Ghana, South Africa and Afghanistan) burdened by high levels of malnutrition in older infants and young children.
