Landscape analysis of dried tomato production and market in Nigeria

Nigeria is the largest producer of tomatoes in Sub-Sahara Africa and the 14th globally with an estimated annual production of 1.8 million tonnes. Over 45% of fresh tomato produced in Nigeria is lost due to poor handling practices, inadequate cold storage and transportation facilities.

This research brief provides the key findings from a study commissioned by GAIN'S Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) to conduct a landscape analysis to better understand the dried tomato production and market in Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were used to elicit information on socio-economic characteristics of selectors processors, traders, and consumers from the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. The results highlight the major challenges in Nigeria’s dried tomato value chain and the four main areas of intervention.
