Effectiveness of an integrated program to reduce maternal and child malnutrition in Indonesia: Process evaluation of Baduta program in Malang and Sidoarjo districts East Java Indonesia


The Baduta program was a program from the Global Alliance for Improve Nutrition (GAIN) intended to improve nutrition and growth of children under two years and nutritional status of pregnant women in Malang and Sidoarjo, East Java.

There were four intervention programs within each pathway of interest. The first was to increase iron intake in pregnant women through improved knowledge and motivation and improved compliance. The second was to increase exclusive breastfeeding through increased knowledge and motivation and establish baby friendly health facilities. The third was to increase good infant and young child feeding (IYCF) through increased knowledge and motivation. The fourth was to increase access to safe drinking water through household water treatment and safe storage and good hand washing practices using increased knowledge and motivation and low cost water filter sales.

This report presents the results of a process evaluation that was conducted to measure the process and achievement of pathways to improve the implementation of Baduta program in improving the nutrition of children and pregnant mothers. Several methods were used including in-depth interviews, observation, secondary data analyses and semi structured interviews. The evaluation of the general process which aimed to clarify the relationship between interventions/activities planned and carried out was measured by impact indicators. Changes in the target group were measured before and after the intervention.
