Webinar – The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on global food security


COVID-19 is disrupting humanitarian aid and development cooperation projects globally. Furthermore, the pandemic has placed unprecedented pressure on food supply chains, undermining access to food for many.

Food insecurity, already on the rise prior to COVID-19, is estimated to affect between 83 and 132 million additional people as a direct result of the pandemic*.

This Webinar will examine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food security and viable solutions to secure access to safe, nutritious food.


Guest Speakers:

  • Ulla Kask - Counsellor, World Trade Organization - Agriculture and Commodities Division

Mrs Kask will address food security from the trade and trade policy angle. She will also touch upon issues such as:

  1. Impact of COVID-19 on agricultural trade
  2. Policy responses by the WTO Members
  3. The WTO rules and Policy space
  4. Food security and other concerns of the WTO Members
  5. Agricultural negotiations.
  • Kibrom A. Abay - Research Fellow, The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

He will be covering and discussing the role of social protection/safety nets to mitigate the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Stella Nordhagen - Researcher, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).

She will focus on the impact of COVID-19 on food supply chains, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
