Reimagining Tempeh. Strengthening Indonesia’s Food Future.

World Pulses Day highlights the role of pulses in improving nutrition, supporting sustainable food systems, and strengthening livelihoods. In 2026, GAIN Indonesia is spotlighting a bold innovation: jack bean tempeh a locally grown alternative that reduces reliance on imported soybeans while promoting resilient, nutritious diets.
Tempeh is a cornerstone of Indonesian cuisine and a vital source of affordable protein. Yet approximately 90% of the soybeans used to produce tempeh are imported. This dependency exposes the food system to price volatility, supply disruptions, and climate-related risks.
As Indonesia works toward stronger food sufficiency and improved nutrition outcomes, diversifying local crop production has become increasingly urgent.
Jack beans offer a promising local alternative. They are climate-resilient, adaptable to local growing conditions, and capable of supporting smallholder livelihoods. When processed into tempeh, jack beans maintain the cultural relevance of the food while strengthening domestic value chains.
Through partnerships with farmers, food innovators, and retailers, GAIN is supporting the development and scaling of jack bean tempeh as part of a broader strategy to promote healthy and sustainable diets.
To mark World Pulses Day 2026, GAIN presents a short documentary exploring the people and partnerships behind Indonesia’s jack bean tempeh movement.
The film captures the innovators, farmers, and food entrepreneurs reshaping a national staple and rethinking what sustainable food systems can look like.
The full film will premiere on 10 February 2026.
