World Breastfeeding Week is marked every year from 1–7 August to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for children, mothers, families and communities.

Breastfeeding gives children a strong start in life. It supports healthy growth and development, strengthens immunity and contributes to better nutrition outcomes in early childhood. It also forms an important part of wider efforts to improve maternal, infant and young child nutrition.

GAIN will be marking World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with reflections and updates from CASCADE on the importance of breastfeeding for child survival, healthy growth and improved nutrition. Breastfeeding support doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes coordinated action across families, communities, health systems, workplaces and policies to create an environment where mothers are supported to breastfeed.

This World Breastfeeding Week, CASCADE is highlighting the importance of strengthening what works — building on proven approaches and investing in the systems that can help make breastfeeding support more sustainable.
