Bolivia - National Food Fortification Program The goal of the national program is to improve the nutritional status of the Bolivian population, particularly children under five years of age and women of reproductive age, through the fortification of wheat flour and vegetable oil. It is expected that the prevalence of iron and vitamin A deficiency and the incidence of neural tube defects (NTD) will be reduced.

China - Flour Fortification in the West Region The goal of the project is to reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in the West Region of China by wheat flour fortification and to facilitate the launch of the national mandatory wheat flour fortification program.

China - NaFeEDTA Fortified Soy Sauce The goal of the proposed food fortification project is to make iron fortified soy sauce available at an affordable price to all Chinese people who are at risk of IDA and reduce the prevalence of IDA by increasing the daily dietary intake of absorbable iron.

Cote Ivoire - Promotion of Fortified Food (Projet Ivoirien de Promotion des Aliments Fortifiés or PIPAF) At the end of five years, all the refined vegetable oil produced in the country will be fortified with vitamin A, and 99.7% of the wheat flour will be fortified with iron and folic acid.

Dominican Republic - Fortification of sugar and wheat flour This national goal will be achieved if 100% of the wheat flour and 80% of the sugar are fortified with iron, folic acid and other B complex vitamins (flour), and vitamin A (sugar) according to the regulatory standards by the year 2008. The achievement of this goal is expected to reduce anaemia from 27% to 20% and vitamin A deficiency from 22.7% (< serum retinol of 20mg/dl) to 10% in children under five, and result in a 20% reduction of NTD rates between Baseline and 2008.

Egypt - Flour Fortification Project The goal is to contribute to the achievement of the Egypt National Fortification Program whose aim is to reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies among vulnerable and at-risk population.

Georgia - National Wheat Flour Fortification The goal of the program is to reduce micronutrient deficiency among the population of Georgia by 20% through regular and increased consumption of wheat flour fortified with iron and folic acid. According to the National Centre of Nutrition of Georgia about 43% of women of reproductive age and 34% of children suffer from iron deficiency anemia. The project also intends to decrease the occurrence of neural tube defects among newborns.

Launch of the GHana fortification program in October 2007

Ghana - National Food Fortification Program The goal is to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia by 20% within 5 years. This goal will be considered successfully achieved if anemia is reduced in women of reproductive age from the current 64% to 51.2%, and in children 3-5 years of age from 84% to 67.2% by Year 5, as well as to reduce the prevalence of preventable birth defects by at least 33%.

Launch of the project in Mali

Mali - Doumouni Nafama Cooking Oil Fortification The goal of the project is to fortify with vitamin A a total of 40,000 MT of cottonseed oil a year within three years in order to contribute to the achievement of the goal of the national fortification Program to reduce the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in pregnant and women of child-bearing age to 30 percent by 2007. The assumption is that the Project will provide 7.7 million person-years of coverage.

Morocco - Oil and wheat fortification The goal of the project is the full implementation of wheat flour fortification and the introduction of a new program to fortify vegetable oil. These are both staple foods available to low-income populations at affordable prices, distributed through nationwide networks.

Nigeria - Social Marketing, Capacity Building, Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment of Fortified foods The goal of this programme is to significantly reduce VAD and IDA resulting in blindness, lowered immunity to infections and anaemia amongst low income families with infants, underfive, and women of reproductive age and other at risk population through Universal vitamin A and iron fortification of wheat and maize flour, vegetable oil and sugar. This goal will be achieved if the incidence of vitamin A deficiency amongst U5 children is reduced from 25% to 20%, and anaemia from 27.8% to 22% between 2004 - 2009. To do this 10 flour mills producing 80% of Nigeria's flour will fortify the flour with vitamin A and iron reaching 100% of the poor and deficient population in Nigeria.

Pakistan - Wheat Flour Fortification The goal of the program is to save lives and to improve the health, nutrition, productivity and cognitive function of vulnerable population groups. The program’s purpose is to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among preschool aged children (from 36% to 10%) and women of reproductive age (from 50% to 18%) and to halve the occurrence of Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) among newborns (from 0.4% to 0.2% of live births), through the universal fortification of wheat flour with iron and folic acid in Pakistan.

Fish Sauce Viet Nam

Viet Nam - Iron Fortified Fish Sauce To reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) at a national level, by making affordable iron-fortified fish sauce available to all those who are at risk for IDA. The specific objective is to decrease the prevalence of IDA among low-income and poor non-pregnant women of reproductive age in covered sites by 10% after three years of consuming fortified fish sauce.

Zambia - Maize Meal Fortification Project The goal of the maize meal fortification program is to significantly reduce micronutrient deficiencies among vulnerable sub-populations through mandatory fortification of commercially milled maize meal. This goal will be achieved if consumption of fortified flour by the target groups is increased from 5% to about 60% between 2005 and 2008. To do so, 32 commercial maize mills producing 60% of the national maize flour will fortify their products with vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, niacin, B12, folic acid, zinc and iron reaching six million persons, that is 60% of the total population or nearly 50% of the vulnerable and deficient population in the country by 2008. All (32) commercial mills producing maize flour will fortify their products (‘breakfast’ and ‘roller’ maize meal) with fortificant as specified below. The total capacity of these mills is 1,350,000 tons per annum, of which capacity about 50% is presently utilised. This represents 60% of the total market -the remaining 40% is produced by small-scale hammer-mills.
