Project to Promote Fortified Complementary Foods for Young Children
Project Overview
GAIN is working with Protein Kisèe-La (PKL) and Helen Keller International (HKI) to address malnutrition among infants and young children in Côte d’Ivoire through the production and promotion of a locally produced fortified complementary food for infants aged 6 to 24 months. GAIN will support PKL to improve its Farinor® product so that its composition reflects the latest evidence of nutritional needs and so that its packaging improves access to low-income families, while marketing it in a way that conforms to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. HKI will carry out public awareness campaigns on optimal infant and young child nutrition targeted at health care workers. GAIN will also support monitoring and evaluation activities.
Goal
The goal of the project is to improve access by poor Ivoirian households to a high quality fortified complementary food on a sustained basis, in a way that protects breastfeeding and promotes optimal infant and young child feeding practices.
Impact
The project expects to cover approximately one fifth of infants aged 6 to 24 months in the country.
Duration
The project started in July 2009 and is funded through June 2014.
