Bangladesh Pushtikona Project

Country:
Bangladesh

Project Overview

GAIN is supporting Renata Limited, a producer of human and animal health products in Bangladesh, to expand the company's capacity to manufacture multinutrient powders (MNPs) called Pushtikona targeted at infants aged 6 to 24 months. GAIN's other project partner,  the Bangladesh based non-governmental organization BRAC, is helping market and distribute the product throughout the country via its large community-based network of health workers. MNPs are now universally accepted by the international nutrition community as a leading and effective response to vitamin and mineral deficiencies among infants and young children in all economic classes in developing countries.

Goal

The project aims to sustainably provide an affordable and effective means for poor households to ensure their children aged 6 to 24 months have the required nutrients for this vulnerable period of development, in a way that reinforces optimal infant feeding practices and the consumption of local foods.

Impact

In its first three years, the project aims to reach close to 7 million infants 6 to 24 months old.

Duration

The project began in March 2010 and is funded through February 2014.
