Business Alliance

The GAIN Business Alliance is a global network dedicated to finding market-based solutions to address the critical issue of malnutrition worldwide.

Markets in the developing world are expanding rapidly with an estimated 5 billion people forming a new consumer base. Academics and policy experts call this group the “Base of the Pyramid”. GAIN’s interest in this group stems from our knowledge that many of them are among the 2 billion people worldwide who lack the vitamins and minerals necessary to lead healthy and productive lives. Companies have an opportunity to help tackle malnutrition by working both individually in their own sectors and collectively through the local and global business alliances.

Nearly every step in the food production and consumption process offers opportunities for some type of business involvement. Food fortification is an innovative and cost effective solution to the global challenge of hunger that combines technical and research capabilities, capacity to produce and deliver products and partnering with members of the community.

GAIN believes that food fortification is not just a matter of principle related to corporate social responsibility - it’s also a compelling, profit-driven business strategy. Tackling the demand for fortified food helps businesses expand while at the same time improving the health of potentially billions of people world-wide. Healthy populations are more likely to become future customers.

Funded by GAIN, the Business Alliance receives technical support from the World Bank Institute and is chaired by UNILEVER.
