GAIN aims to improve the nutrition of 1 billion people
We have clear performance targets. While some key data are not yet available, and measuring them can be quite challenging in some situations, our progress to mid-2007 has been significant.
1. Progress still required: Design programs that will cost less than US$15 per DALY gained when at full-scale
We estimate that GAIN’s current programs will cost between US$ 19.50 and US$ 37.00 per DALY gained when they are at full-scale. We are currently developing new programs to reduce costs further and are also incorporating folic acid into our DALYs calculations which currently include just vitamin A, iron and zinc.
2. On track: Reduce deficiency prevalence by 30% in project areas
First sentinel site data, from a project in China, shows anemia reductions among women and children in the order of 1/3 in project areas.
3. On track: Reach 1 billion people with fortified foods and other nutrition strategies
Our best available data shows that we are reaching 160 million people with our current programs, and that we will reach 612 million when those programs are at full-scale. Other initiatives, such as our program aimed at infants and young children, oil fortification, salt iodization and the GAIN Premix Fund are expected to reach the remaining 400 million people required to meet our target.
4. On track: Reach more than 500 million people within target groups most vulnerable to malnutrition
Our best available data shows that we are currently reaching 80 million people in our target groups (women and children) and that we will reach 335 million of the most vulnerable when our current programs are at full-scale. We are currently designing new initiatives to reach this target.
5. Better than expected: a cost per target individual of less than US$ 0.25
The cost to GAIN per target individual reached is projected to be US$ 0.13 when projects are at full-scale.
6. On track: Leverage investments for nutrition from the private sector of US$ 700 million and from donors of US$ 50 million
Our current data indicates we have leveraged commitments of more than US$ 360 million from the private sector. We expect to see further increases in these commitments with the launch of our work on infant and young child nutrition as well as our new salt iodization initiative. We have already exceeded the target for new donor funds with US$ 70.5 million raised.
