Targets Description Progress
Target 1 Reach: 1 billion individuals consuming fortified foods GAIN estimates that 188 million individuals are consuming fortified foods.
Target 2 Coverage: 500 million target individuals (i.e. women and children) consuming fortified foods GAIN estimates that 99 million women and children are consuming fortified foods.
Target 3 Cost-per-target individual reached <US$0.25 GAIN estimates that it costs US$0.35 to reach each target individual.
Target 4 30% reduction in the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies Neural tube defects fell by 30 percent in South Africa after folic acid was added to maize meal and wheat flour. In China, data collected from 21 sentinel sites showed that anemia dropped by approximately one third following the fortification of soy sauce with iron.
