Jordan national nutrition survey assessing the impact of fortified flour on women and child nutrition

Since April 2008, GAIN has been supporting Jordan’s Ministry of Health (Department of Nutrition) in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Jordan Bureau of Statistics, the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and UNICEF to undertake a national micronutrient survey. By comparing iron and vitamin A deficiencies in the Jordan population measured in 2002 and 2010, the impact of Jordan’s national flour fortification program will be assessed. The survey will also investigate the prevalence of vitamin D, B12 and folate deficiencies as well the percentage of households that consume iron-fortified bread and iodized salt. The survey fieldwork was undertaken in March-April 2010, and results are expected to be available in late 2010.
