Our Goals

Improving health and stimulating development

GAIN works to improve the nutritional status of 1 billion people to save lives and reduce disease; improve individual wellbeing, enjoyment and productivity; and thereby reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth.

We focus on reducing the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies among target groups by increasing the regular consumption of fortified foods.

Reaching internationally agreed goals

Our work contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and helps realise the time-bound targets set by representatives of the 190 countries at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children in May, 2002. They are the virtual elimination of iodine deficiency by 2005; the elimination of vitamin A deficiency by 2010; and a reduction of at least 30 per cent in the global prevalence of iron deficiency by 2010.

Our Performance indicators

We measure progress against key indicators and have set clear targets for our performance:

1. Cost per DALY gained: < $15

2. Reduction in deficiency prevalence: > 30%

3. Reach: 1 billion people

4. Coverage of target groups: More than 500 million people

5. Cost per target individual: < US$ 0.25

6. Raised investment from the private sector: > US$ 700 million

What is a DALY?

DALY stands for 'Disability Adjusted Life Year'. It is the scientific measure for the total number of healthy years that are lost in a specific population due to death and illness. One DALY gained means that one individual lives one year longer and disease-free.
