Nigeria - Social Marketing, Capacity Building, Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment of Fortified foods
The goal of this programme is to significantly reduce VAD and IDA resulting in blindness, lowered immunity to infections and anaemia amongst low income families with infants, underfive, and women of reproductive age and other at risk population through Universal vitamin A and iron fortification of wheat and maize flour, vegetable oil and sugar. This goal will be achieved if the incidence of vitamin A deficiency amongst U5 children is reduced from 25% to 20%, and anaemia from 27.8% to 22% between 2004 - 2009. To do this 10 flour mills producing 80% of Nigeria's flour will fortify the flour with vitamin A and iron reaching 100% of the poor and deficient population in Nigeria.

Description
The general objective of the program is to achieve increased fortification and consumption of fortified foods by 80% of the at-risk and general population within 36 months while pursuing complementary strategies of supplementation and dietary diversification for micronutrient deficiency control in Nigeria. The vision of the fortification programme is to attain a Nigeria where infants, child and maternal morbidity and mortality due to micronutrient deficiencies are reduced to levels of non public health importance. The impact would be improved health and well being for the poor and vulnerable, within five years and maintenance of that state of health beyond five years.
