National partnerships

GAIN stimulates the establishment of national-level partnerships for collaborative action.

At the national level, GAIN encourages national partnerships to fight malnutrition through our networks and grantmaking. As part of our work on food fortification, we encourage National Fortification Alliances to implement food fortification of one or more commonly-consumed food staples.

National Fortification Alliances identify the project and receive GAIN funding and technical advice for collaborative action. These alliances typically include a range of organizations at the national and international level that work together at the national level:

  • Government (e.g. Ministries of Health, Industry, Social Development, Family Planning)
  • Institutes (e.g. national health, industry, trade, rural development, agriculture)
  • Private sector (associations, businesses)
  • International organisations (UNICEF, WHO, WFP)
  • Civil society (national and international NGOs)

One key objective is that the national-level partnerships identify sustainable improvements to public health, i.e. market-based solutions to malnutrition that continue even after the national alliance is disbanded.
