Morocco - Oil and wheat fortification

The goal of the project is the full implementation of wheat flour fortification and the introduction of a new program to fortify vegetable oil. These are both staple foods available to low-income populations at affordable prices, distributed through nationwide networks.


Target group

Within the 17.1 million targeted population, the primary beneficiaries are pregnant and lactating women and children under five years of age.

The project aims to reach 17.1 million or 57% of the total population with fortified oil and 9.6 million with fortified wheat flour by Year 3.

Description

The project was developed in 2002 by a National Fortification Alliance, comprised of public, private and non-governmental organizations, led by the Ministry of Health. Launched in April 2005, the project enables mills to produce flour fortified with iron, folic acid and B vitamins, and major producers of cooking oil to fortify their products with vitamin A and D.
