Copenhagen Consensus ranks fighting malnutrition as best development investment

Geneva, 3 June 2008 (GAIN) – The Copenhagen Consensus 2008 lists the provision of micronutrients to 80% of 140 million malnourished children in developing countries as the best development investment.

At an estimated cost of US$ 60 million per year, the benefits in terms of improved health, reduced deaths, and increased income opportunities would be a staggering US$ 1 billion.




GAIN releases Annual Report 2006/2007

Geneva, 26 May 2008 (GAIN) - The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition has, since its creation in 2002, provided more than US$ 40 million in funding and technical support, including US$ 28 million in grants to fortify basic staple foods in 19 large-scale projects in 18 countries, to improve the nutrition of millions of people. Its programs are on course to reach 600 million people when they are at full scale.




GAIN launches a new partnership fund of US$ 800 million to fight increasing malnutrition due to escalating food prices

WFP, MOSS and GAIN celebrate start of flour fortification in Egypt to reduce widespread anemia by 28%

Aswan, Egypt, 25 March 2008 (GAIN/WFP) - The fortification of Egyptian flour, used in the production of widely-consumed baladi bread, with iron and folic acid has been launched at Aswan, Egypt.

The program aims to reduce widespread anemia in Egypt, currently affecting 40% of the population, by 28% in five years.




Fortified foods launched in Côte d’Ivoire

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, 4 March 2008 (GAIN) - Helen Keller International, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and the Ministry of Health of Côte d’Ivoire launched in Abidjan on 27 February the availability on the market of cooking oil fortified with added vitamin A, and wheat flour fortified with iron and folic acid.




A GAIN Partnership wins the EFMD Award for case study on corporate social responsibility

GAIN Receives US$ 38 million Gates Foundation grant to save children’s lives with healthy food

Washington, 16 January 2008 – The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) today announces a US$ 38 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to increase private sector engagement in the fight against malnutrition in young children.

GAIN will use the grant to work with private companies and public-private partnerships to introduce nutritious foods for infants and young children between 6 and 24 months of age. GAIN will provide loans, grants and technical advice to help develop and distribute low-cost, easy-to-use, nutritious food products.




Launch of national oil fortification program and first meeting of business leaders at start of GAIN Board meeting

Dhaka, 4 November 2007 (GAIN) – The Government of Bangladesh, the Vegetable Oil Refiners Association and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition today launch a national program to add vitamin A to 70% of all cooking oil in Bangladesh to improve public health.




Ghana launches national food fortification program

Accra, 3 October 2007 (GAIN) – Ghana on Wednesday launched its national food fortification program that will fortify vegetable oil with vitamin A, and wheat flour with vitamin A and B, iron and folic acid to improve public health, in particular of children and women.

Major Courage Quashigah (rtd), Minister of Health, opened the launch ceremony.




GAIN launches global iodization program and premix fund at Clinton Global Initiative

New York, 29 September 2007 (GAIN) – The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition today announced the start of a global iodization program and a global premix fund to improve public health in developing countries at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York.

“These two initiatives will promote and enable the large-scale addition of essential vitamins and minerals to commonly-used foods in developing countries that will lead to the cost-effective improvement of individual health,” said Mr. Marc Van Ameringen, Executive Director of GAIN at the launch event.
