Global Nutrition Call to Action
GAIN Joins Partners in Signing Global Call to Action to Prioritize Nutrition
On 28 March 2011, at a Nutrition Summit linked to Biovision, the 7th World Life Sciences Forum in Lyon, GAIN joined representatives from business, academia and health in signing and publishing a global call to action that asks for nutrition to be given a larger role in supporting public health (EGAN (the patient’s network for medical research and health); the IGA (International Genetic Alliance); the IOF (International Osteoporosis Foundation); Preparing for Life; Kraft Foods; Unilever; Sight and Life; GAIN and DSM).
This call to action asks for public-private partnerships to scale up nutrition solutions that help fill in the nutrient gaps in daily diets in the developing world. It also calls international and national policymakers to play their part in creating public awareness of the benefits of balanced nutrition and in establishing legal frameworks that support the implementation of nutrition programs.
Balanced nutrition will not only result in better nutrition but reduced health care costs since less people will suffer from chronic diseases and other health problems related to insufficient nutrients in diets the call argues. Signatories have committed to supporting public awareness of nutrition, science-based nutrition advice and platforms that facilitate public and private sector collaboration.
