GAIN NoSCA, LLC - Washington DC, USA
The main activities of the GAIN office in Washington DC are related to policy and advocacy.
GAIN’s advocacy efforts aim to position nutrition as central to the global health and development platform since poor nutrition is clearly an impediment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. By elevating the visibility of nutrition at the global, regional and national levels, GAIN seeks to create an enabling environment for improved policies, increased resources to address malnutrition and increased demand for nutritious food by vulnerable populations.
Key activities include:
The 1,000 Days partnership promotes investment in nutrition from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday when better nutrition can have a life-changing impact on a child’s future. GAIN teamed up with InterAction, a coalition of US-based international relief and development organizations, and the US Department of State to establish the initiative. The partnership mobilizes US-based partners and facilitates cross-sector dialogue – from nutrition to agriculture to health.
Future Fortified is a global campaign to help millions of women and children around the world gain access to the essential nutrients they need to lead healthy, enriched lives. It seeks to build public and political will by bringing together the first ever community of individuals, businesses and organizations working to improve nutrition. Through Future Fortified and in conjunction with partners DSM and Herbalife, GAIN has already committed to providing 20 million packets of multinutrient powders for distribution in Kenya to nourish 200,000 young children.
The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement is a collective global commitment to scale up evidence-based nutrition interventions that will result in lasting improved health status for individuals and nations. GAIN has played an active role in SUN, including participation in the SUN Transition Team, which provides leadership to the movement, and in the SUN High-Level meeting, organized during the UN General Assembly in September 2011. Twenty six countries are now part of the SUN process and are actively strengthening their national nutrition programming.
