  • Fighting Malnutrition and Hunger in the Developing World (N9-909-406), by Ray Goldberg, Djordjija Petkoski and Kerry Herman The problems of hunger and malnutrition remain enormous global challenges. Malnutrition played a role in more than half of all child deaths; and in 2009 one-seventh of humanity? Over one billion people? Were chronically malnourished; and one in three people in Sub-Saharan Africa still did not have enough to eat. How do the private, public, and NGO sectors of society work together to achieve better results and include the recipients in the process? Examples such as the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, a partnership of governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society showcase the importance of collective action in the fights against poverty.
  • Alleviating Poverty and Malnutrition (9-907-409), by Ray Goldberg and Kerry Herman Despite international commitments, by December 2006, the global development challenges were not being met. It was clear to the World Bank Institute Business, Competitiveness and Development Team that new approaches and ideas were needed to meet the Millennium Development Goals. This case shows several successful models, including the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, that tried to satisfy low income markets while also improving per capita income, health, nutrition levels, the environment and sustainability concerns of the countries and regions in which they operated.
