Event Highlights
The office also assists the GAIN Secretariat with convening events that bring together a wide range of stakeholders in the fight against malnutrition. In June 2009 it helped convene the first consultation of the South Africa Alliance against Malnutrition in Cape Town. The event, opened by South Africa’s Minister of Trade and Industry, brings together the South African government, civil society, academic
organizations and business partners to begin to address the full nutrition agenda in South Africa – from malnutrition to overnutrition. Key action areas include: fortification; coordinated public health messaging; infant and young child feeding; specialised programs targeting HIV/AIDS, school children and the most vulnerable; and capacity development. Following this successful event, GAIN is convening a follow-up meeting in Johannesburg in October 2009 to develop an action plan to achieve improved nutrition in South Africa.
